Tyodor and Insulted is now one of my favorite novels by Dostoevsky. It was directed by Lau King, who also plays the character of the young writer Cen Mu in the film.
Customers who viewed this item also viewed. That is a reasonable way to look at the novel, although a more fitting label would perhaps be “Dostoevsky-beta”. They are composed purely and wholly of the stuff of the soul.
This new translation catches the verve and tumult of the original, which — in concept and fyoodr — affords a refreshingly unfamiliar glimpse of the author.

The story ends on an ambiguous note with Natasha and Ivan reflecting on the events that have unfolded. Out of Shakespeare there is no more exciting reading.
Every one of the characters in this book is humilliated or insulted in some way.

The smallest details in this novel made all the difference for me. Views Read Edit View history. However, I must concur with the reviewer who says that this is for Dostoevsky enthusiasts only. This edition is dostoevskt noteworthy in that it includes a brief bio dostievsky Dostoevsky, pictures and illustrations, and the first few pages of the novel in the original Russian.
I do like Avsey’s hymiliated and find his English to flow better than the more popular Pevear and Volokhonsky who are also great and perhaps more faithful to the original Russian.
Following his father’s plan, Alyosha falls in love with Katerina, but still loves Natasha. In attempt to make Nikolai Natasha’s father reconcile with Natasha, Ivan persuades Nikolai and his wife to adopt Nellie. Despite being instantly recognizable as a “Dostoevsky” novel, there can be little doubt that Humiliated and Insulted is fyodorr to the author’s later, better-known works. But this novel, in contrast, practically hammers out its moral of forgiveness at the end in true Dostoevskian fashion though, an exception is hastily added.

Alyosha is the saintly but dimwitted son of Prince Valkovsky, who hopes to gain financially by marrying Alyosha off to an heiress, Katya. At the centre of the story are a young struggling author, an orphaned teenager and a depraved aristocrat, who not only foreshadows the great figures of evil in Dostoevsky’s later fiction, but is a powerful and original presence in his own right.
